What to Expect

A safe space to explore what's really going on

Sex therapy goes beyond traditional couples counseling by addressing sexual concerns directly — not dancing around them. I work with the emotional, relational, and physical layers that shape your intimate life: the patterns you've developed, the wounds you carry, and the disconnection you feel. Whether it's desire, trust, trauma, or communication, we explore what's actually getting in the way and build a path forward together.

I begin by exploring why you perceive an issue as problematic, highlighting the impact of societal norms on sex and sexuality. It's vital for changes to stem from personal desire rather than societal pressures.

Addressing sexual issues involves considering relational dynamics, personal history, and contextual factors, with a focus on emotional, cognitive, behavioral, relational, and contextual changes. I utilize various therapeutic approaches, including EFT, Parts Work, and Trauma-Focused therapy. As a sex and body positive therapist, I support diverse sexual identities and practices, affirming queer, poly, and kink orientations.

What Clients Say

★★★★★

“She was able to validate my feelings but also help me work on areas in my life where I could use improvement. I felt confident through the whole process that even though I was struggling, if I worked with her she would help me reach a resolution. I believe my husband felt very comfortable with her as well. Her option to meet on Zoom made it that much more convenient — I could make an appointment at any time during the day. I appreciate all she did for my husband and I.”

“Marisol is one of the best therapists my wife or I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She takes the time to get to know each individual, takes notes, and really focuses on getting what each person needs to help make a relationship work. The care and steps she provides to work through issues 100% WORK and I cannot thank her enough.”

“Marisol has been immensely helpful to me, as both a personal and couples counselor. She is both a phenomenal listener and guide — leading my partner and I to see our issues from new angles, gain insights into ourselves and one another, and get past abstract ideas into concrete goal setting for growth.”

What To Look For In A Sex Therapist In New York

When looking for a sex therapist, prioritize finding a couples therapist with a specialization in sex therapy. Training in couples therapy is crucial for effectively addressing sexual issues within relationships. Exercise caution when considering sex coaches, as they may focus primarily on behavioral and cognitive aspects without fully addressing complex relationship dynamics. Inquire about the therapist’s experience with relational trauma and their approach to sexual desire discrepancies. Optimal therapy should encompass behavior, cognition, relational and contextual factors, as well as past traumas.

FAQ

Questions on Sex Therapy in New York

Everything you need to know before your first session

No. Sex therapy is just as valuable for individuals as it is for couples. Many people come on their own to work through personal concerns around desire, trauma, identity, performance anxiety, or past experiences that are affecting their intimate life.

The initial consultation is $350. Ongoing sessions are $250. Payment is due at the time of the session.

I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. However, I can provide a superbill upon request, which you may submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement depending on your out-of-network benefits.

A limited number of sliding scale spots are available for clients who demonstrate financial need. Please reach out directly to discuss whether this is an option for your situation.

Yes. HSA and FSA cards are accepted as a form of payment. Please check with your plan provider to confirm that therapy services are covered under your specific account.

All sessions are 50 minutes.

All sessions are conducted via secure telehealth. This allows me to work with clients anywhere in New York State, and makes scheduling significantly more flexible for busy New Yorkers.

Treatment length varies depending on the concern and your goals. Some clients see meaningful progress in 8 to 12 sessions. Others choose to continue longer for deeper relational or trauma work. We will discuss timelines openly as we go.

Weekly sessions are recommended early in treatment — they help build momentum, establish trust, and create consistency when the work is just beginning. That said, therapy should also be financially sustainable. Once we have established a good foundation, sessions can move to bi-weekly or whatever frequency works best for your life and budget. We will figure that out together.

Desire discrepancy is one of the most common concerns I work with. Low desire in a partner is rarely about attraction alone — it is usually connected to stress, emotional disconnection, hormonal factors, unresolved resentment, or past experiences. Therapy helps both partners understand what is actually driving the gap and build a path toward reconnection.
